Hibernation is over – it is time for us to meet again and share all the calligraphic and paper arts projects that have been helping you deal with CABIN FEVER. Bring your lettering projects, maybe a work-in-progress that needs a fresh look by BVCG peers, experiments, and discoveries to share. Maybe you have been gifted with new tools or papers or ephemera; maybe you picked up exotic treasures at your exotic winter travel destination. During Show & Share we look forward to seeing and hearing about your calligraphic and paper arts journey.
Engrosser's Script
In this month's enrichment session, Maxie Peña will do a slideshow presentation on what Engrosser’s Script is and how it is different from other pointed pen scripts. Following the slides, Maxie will walk us through the basic strokes of Engrosser's Script, demonstrating this modular script. We will do some drills and write a few lowercase samples.
If you would like to write along, please bring an oblique pointed pen holder, pointed nib, and ink. There will be supplies to borrow if you do not have your own. See below for a list of Maxie's preferred tools.
Supply list:
- Worksheet - This will be provided on the day of the event.
- Oblique pointed pen holder - The Deuce 2-in-1 pen from Yoke Pen Co. is a great choice for beginners.
- Pointed nib - Hunt 22B or Hunt 101 or Nikko G or Tachikawa G
- Ink - Tom Norton's Walnut Drawing Ink or Moon Palace Sumi or Vermillion Ink or Fox & Quills Iron Gall Ink
About Maxie Peña
Maxie first fell in love with the pointed pen in 2016. She started with Copperplate and Modern Calligraphy. After a couple of years, she felt that her script was missing something - that was when she discovered Engrosser’s Script. Learning this script and its rules has allowed her to refine her pointed pen skills and take it to the next level. Taking courses from Nina Tran and Connie Chen from 2020 onwards has also trained her eyes and improved her hand immensely. Maxie received her Engrosser’s Script Certificate of Proficiency from IAMPETH in June 2023 and Certificate of Excellence in June 2024. Maxie is new to Calgary and is a new member of the Bow Valley Calligraphy Guild. Welcome Maxie!
Please bring your indoor shoes if the weather is mucky. There will be door prizes and refreshments to enjoy during our break. Be sure to wear your name tag and we’ll see you at the meeting. Bring a friend. Everyone is welcome!
